Cavs set to debut Jamison, hope to start new win streak vs. Bobcats

(Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Cleveland Cavaliers are set to unveil what the team
hopes will be the final piece towards a championship in tonight's clash with
the Charlotte Bobcats from Time Warner Cable Arena.
Cleveland made one of the biggest moves prior to Thursday's trade deadline,
acquiring two-time All-Star Antawn Jamison from the Washington Wizards in a
three-team, six-player trade on Wednesday. The standout forward, who's
averaging 20.5 points and 8.8 rebounds on the season, is expected to provide a
second strong scoring option alongside LeBron James and further bolster a
Cavaliers squad that currently owns the NBA's best record at 43-12.
Neither Jamison nor guard Sebastian Telfair, shipped from the Los Angeles Clippers to Cleveland as part of the deal, were available for last night's
game against Denver. The Cavs could have used both after having its franchise-
record 13-game win streak halted with a 118-116 overtime loss to the Nuggets,
in which Carmelo Anthony hit the deciding shot with just 1.9 seconds left in
the extra period.
James did his part to try to keep Cleveland's run intact, pouring in 43 points
and dishing out 15 assists in addition to grabbing 13 rebounds in a
superlative individual performance. The reigning league MVP had tied the
contest at 116-116 by converting a three-point play with 23.1 seconds
remaining in overtime, but Anthony responded by knocking down a jumper over
the arm of the outstretched James on the ensuing possession.
"We both did what we had to do to put our teams in position to win; [Anthony]
just made one more play," said James. "It was a great shot. If I got any
closer, I was going to foul him."
Shaquille O'Neal added 18 points for Cleveland, which also had a stretch of 11
straight victories at home come to an end.
The Cavaliers have prevailed in their last three road tilts as well and have
amassed a league-best 19-8 mark as the visitor this season. The club will play
four of its next five games away from home, including a key matchup at
Southeast Division leader Orlando on Sunday.
Charlotte will be out to bounce back from a shocking home defeat to cellar-
dwelling New Jersey in its first outing after the All-Star break. The lowly
Nets shot nearly 52 percent from the field and picked up just their fifth win
of the season with Tuesday's 103-94 triumph.
"It was pretty bad," said Bobcats head coach Larry Brown of his team's
showing. "Transition defense was bad, halfcourt defense was bad, we didn't get
any loose balls. It looked like we were the team that's been struggling and
they looked liked the team that's trying to make the playoffs."
Gerald Wallace and Boris Diaw each posted double-doubles in a losing cause,
with the former compiling 21 points and 10 rebounds and the latter finishing
with 19 points and 11 boards.
The setback was only the third in Charlotte's last 13 tilts at Time Warner
Arena, where the team has produced an excellent 19-7 record thus far in
2009-10. One of those wins came at the expense of the Cavaliers, a 94-87
decision back on November 27.
The Bobcats also dealt Cleveland one of its four losses on its home court this
season in the most recent meeting between these foes. That occurred on January
3, when Stephen Jackson scored 22 points and Wallace had 19 points and 12
rebounds to lead Charlotte to a 91-88 victory.
Charlotte, seeking to make the postseason for the first time in its six-year
existence, currently occupies the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern
Conference with a 26-26 record.
The Bobcats made a move towards enhancing their chances on Thursday, obtaining
forward Tyrus Thomas and center Theo Ratliff in separate deadline deals.
Charlotte sent guards Ronald Murray and Acie Law and a future first-round
draft choice to Chicago for Thomas, a former lottery pick of the Bulls who's
averaging 8.8 points and 6.3 rebounds per game, while the 15-year veteran
Ratliff was acquired from San Antonio for a second-round selection in 2016.
Charlotte may need both frontcourt players to make an impact tonight,
considering centers Tyson Chandler (ankle) and DeSagana Diop (knee) are
unlikely to play this evening. Starting center Nazr Mohammed is considered
questionable as well due to a sore back that limited him to 11 minutes in
Tuesday's loss.

The San Francisco 49ers (5-11 SU, 5-10-1 ATS in 2007; 1-1 SU & ATS in pre-season) found some offensive life last week, and they will try to build some momentum on Thursday night as they travel to the Windy City to take on the Chicago Bears (7-9 SU & ATS in 2007; 0-2 SU, 0-1-1 ATS in pre-season) in an NFL matchup that is set to get underway at 8 PM ET at Soldier Field (natural turf) in Chicago.
Thursday, August 21
NFL betting odds: CHICAGO -3 (-120), Total 37
NOTABLE STAT: San Francisco was last in points, last in total offense in 2007
KEY NFL BETTING TREND: SF has lost its last seven SU on pre-season road
In the BetUS NFL pre-season football betting odds, the Bears are listed as a three-point favorite (laying -120), with the total posted at 37 points.
Here are some NFL football betting trends as they relate to this matchup (reflecting numbers going into the 2008 season):
* SF has lost 11 of its last 14 games SU
* SF has covered three of its last 11 games
* SF has lost six of its last seven road games SU
* SF has covered one of its last seven road games
* CHI has covered five of its last eight games
* CHI has played five of its last seven games OVER the total
* CHI has covered four of its last 13 home games
* SF has lost its last seven pre-season road games SU
* CHI has covered two of its last seven home pre-season games
Well, I guess we should congratulate the Bears on making their quarterback choice for the season's opening game, as they have designated Kyle Orton the starter against Indianapolis. The Bears obviously have lost patience with Rex Grossman, and what they do with him at this point is anybody's guess. But suffice it to say that there isn't a quarterback competition anymore, at least in training camp.
Meanwhile, the quarterback competition may also be settled in San Francisco, where the Niners bounced back from a lackluster 18-6 loss to the Raiders, in which they turned the ball over four times, to execute a 34-6 rout of the Packers last Saturday. However, coach Mike Nolan has stopped short of saying that, insisting that the job is still open. But J.T. O'Sullivan, the longshot of the trio of Niner signal-callers who opened camp, will start his third straight pre-season game here. Against Green Bay, O'Sullivan was only 8-for-17, and was intercepted, but he also threw for 9.1 yards an attempt, which included a 59-yard TD pass to Josh Morgan. The others struggled.
Some offensive cohesion is badly needed, in light of the Niners' dismal 2007 campaign, in which they were dead last in the NFL in scoring, with just 13.7 points a game. And O'Sullivan is the guy who is most familiar with offensive coordinator Mike Martz's exacting system, because he learned it last year in Detroit. O'Sullivan will go at least the entire first half and may even last longer. He'll be relieved by Alex Smith, with Shawn Hill doing the mop-up work. Three receivers who were out last week - Bryant Johnson, Ashley Lelie and Arnaz Battle - will miss this game too.
That may hurt a little here, especially since the Bears will be using a lot of their defensive starters. And it's the defense that has been keeping the Bears in games thus far. In fact, the defense and special teams were responsible for the first 19 points Chicago scored against Seattle last time out, as the offense really struggled with Grossman at the controls. But maybe the first-team offense has a chance to settle a little bit as it works more with Orton at the helm.
Certainly we have concerns about the Bears' offensive line, but we like the scenario for them here, especially if O'Sullivan doesn't make some bis plays. The Niners may have nowhere else to turn right now, and they have lost seven straight road games in the pre-season. Let's take Chicago, the three-point favorite in the NFL football betting odds.

Two playoff teams from 2007 take center stage on the NFL Network Sunday night in a Week 2 NFL betting match-up when the (0-1) New England Patriots betting head south to Florida for a contest with the (1-0) Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
New England HC Bill Belichick couldn’t care less about the way his team plays in the preseason. With a chance to tie last week’s game with the Baltimore Ravens betting, He elected to go for the two-point conversion and outright victory. The conversion failed, and the Pats ended up falling to the Ravens by a 16-15 final count.
New England rolled off twelve unanswered points to give it a chance at securing the victory, but it never threatened to cover the 3.5-point spread. NFL bettors saw this one coming, as they bet the Ravens down from +6 to +3.5 as the week progressed. QB Tom Brady didn’t take part in the Patriots first preseason clash, but could see action this weekend.
His three replacements all put up embarrassing numbers. They went a combined 17 for 33, and threw three interceptions and no touchdowns. The New England defense was encouraging, as they held the Ravens to 2/12 third down conversions and surrendered just ten first downs. That ‘D’ should be bolstered with the addition of former Bucs and Denver Broncos betting safety John Lynch, who could make his Patriots debut on Sunday against his former mates.
HC Jon Gruden had to be impressed with the way his Bucs played on both sides of the ball in their dominating 17-6 victory over the Miami Dolphins in Week 1’s NFL pre-season betting action. Bucs bettors were quite happy with the effort, as they made a mockery of the fact that they were underdogs in the game.
The logjam at the quarterback position didn’t get any easier to separate for Gruden, as all four of his QBs had positive experiences in the first exhibition of 2008. The four combined to complete 28 of their 40 passes for 204 yards and a touchdown, and that was without starting QB Jeff Garcia in the lineup.
RB Michael Bennett had 19 carries and four receptions, totaling 90 yards and a touchdown. Expect to see more of Bennett, Kenneth Darby, and Earnest Graham, as they all compete for playing time with Warrick Dunn in the backfield this season. Defensively, the Bucs recorded four sacks and held the Fins offense in check all day.
First round draft pick Aqib Talib was impressive in the secondary, recording a tackle and two pass defenses in his debut. Don’t be surprised to see Talib in the starting lineup opposite Ronde Barber for the Bucs in ’08.
The betting trends suggest that NFL bettors should be backing the Bucs in this intra-conference exhibition.
These two teams hooked up last year in Tampa Bay, with the Bucs winning that game 13-10. The Buccaneers have only lost one preseason game at home dating back to the beginning of the ’05 preseason. The Patriots have had a mixed bag of results in their recent exhibitions. They have gone 2-2 ATS and SU each of the last three years.
New England currently sits as modest 1-point favorites in this preseason showdown with the ‘total’ now sitting at 34.5.
