Devils try to bounce back against visiting Flyers

12/12/2009 -
(Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The New Jersey Devils will try to get back in the win
column against a bitter rival tonight, when they host the struggling
Philadelphia Flyers in an Atlantic Division battle at Prudential Center.
The Devils, who are tied with Pittsburgh atop the Atlantic with 43 points, had
a four-game winning streak snapped Friday night by the visiting Florida Panthers.
Meanwhile, Philadelphia has been shut out in three of its last six games,
including 2-0 by Ottawa on Thursday. The Flyers have lost six of their last
seven overall and are currently 14 points behind the Devils in the standings.
The Flyers, however, have beaten New Jersey in both meetings so far this
season, picking up a win at home and on the road. Philly has taken three
straight and six of nine overall in the series, but the Devils have still won
14 of the last 16 meetings as host.
The Devils are coming off a 4-2 setback to the Panthers as Michael Frolik
scored twice and former New Jersey goaltender Scott Clemmensen made 26 saves
to lead Florida to victory.
Brian Rolston and Dean McAmmond scored for the Devils, who had won seven of
their previous eight outings. Jamie Langenbrunner added an assist to push his
point streak to seven games.
Martin Brodeur was unable to pass Terry Sawchuk for most career shutouts, as
he allowed four goals on 22 shots in defeat.
"They got off to a lead right from the get-go, and from there they really sat
back," Brodeur said. "We had a hard time going through the neutral zone on
them. Some nights it doesn't work as well as you want to."
The setback dropped New Jersey to 10-6-0 as the host this year. Tonight marks
the third segment of a five-game homestand for the Devils.
Brodeur has an excellent chance to get career shutout No. 104 tonight as
Philadelphia's anemic offense has netted just 11 goals over its last seven
tests. The Flyers have also lost three of four since Peter Laviolette took
over as head coach for a fired John Stevens last Friday.
The Flyers, who scored six of those 11 goals in a win over the Islanders on
Tuesday, saw all 23 of their shots stopped by the Senators Brian Elliott in
Thursday's loss. Brian Boucher, meanwhile, was beaten just once on 24 shots.
Philadelphia went 0-for-6 on the power play, including a scoreless 5-on-3
advantage in the first period. The Senators' second goal came shorthanded when
the Flyers pulled Boucher late in the game while on the power play for a 6-
on-4 advantage.
"The puck never found the net," said Laviolette. "We missed the net. There
were a lot of blocked shots by Ottawa."
The Flyers start a three-game road trip tonight and have lost five of their
last six on the road. They are 5-7-0 overall as the guest.
Philadelphia forward Dan Carcillo will serve the final contest of his four-
game suspension tonight for punching Washington's Matt Bradley in last
Saturday's 8-2 home loss to the Capitals.
